From Blah to Brilliant (Part One)

"Choose you this day who you will serve…"

Joshua 24:15

Do I have to?

By: Anthony B. Campbell

How many parents have heard that question after they asked their child to do something? If you were a child at one time (I think most of us were), how did your mama or daddy respond if you dared to ask that question? Most parents would respond with a resounding "YES, YOU HAVE TO!" Needless to say, even though we know what the answer is going to be, we ask God this same question almost daily. And, just like our parents, he responds with the same answer.

Child of God, there is no way around it. To go from a blah association to a brilliant relationship with the Lord will require some effort on your part. It means a real commitment. The first step requires that we make a decision. God wants to know, "Are you with me or not?" The reason why so many of us are stuck or have become stagnant spiritually is because we still have not made up our minds that we are going all the way with Jesus and look at God response:

"…For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways."

Your Father in heaven is saying, "Don’t even try me like that. How are you going to expect something from me like a brilliant relationship and you do not even trust me enough to make a serious commitment to me?" Yes, you have to make up your mind and be serious about your walk with the Lord if you want to go from blah to brilliant. Yes, this commitment will require some changes in your life. Yes, it means you have to sacrifice some things. However, it’s worth it. Just read what Jesus said in Mark 10:28-30.

But it’s too hard", we whine to God. Our loving Father understands our situation. That is why he sends us someone to help us with our commitment (Romans 8:12-14). What makes it tough for us is that we resist His (the Holy Spirit’s) help. We keep yielding to our sinful carnal fleshly desires instead of yielding to the Spirit (Romans 7:16-18). As a result, we stay in the rut of blahness.

My child, if you want me to work in your life, you have got to give me a chance. But, it’s going to be hard for me to work where there is no commitment on your part.

Starting today, instead of asking "Do I have to?" just say, "Lord, here I am. I am yours. Let’s get started."

"Draw nigh to God and He will draw nigh to you."

PS. Can you find the scriptures referred to in today’s article?
