What is Your Plan?

by

Anthony B. Campbell, Minister

"For which of you intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first and counteth the cost…"

 Luke 14:28

Many of us begin a new year with a lot of hope and enthusiasm. We see, in many ways, a new year as a new beginning. Everything that we were not able to achieve in the previous year, we make up our minds that, in this year, it will get done. Therefore, we set goals for ourselves and even make resolutions. While it is a very good thing to set goals for yourself, it is very frustrating to reach the end of another year and realize you have not been able to achieve those goals. This is also the frustration that we often experience in our Christian walk. We say to ourselves, "I am going to do this or that in order to be the person that God wants me to be". We, then, with all seriousness and enthusiasm begin to march toward our spiritual goal only to become frustrated when we fail in our endeavors. Well, child of God, in 2004, you do not have to experience the disappointment of failing to achieve your goals. However, there is something that you must do so that, this time, the outcome will be different. What it is that you MUST do is something that most people fail to do. If you and I are going to achieve our goals (individually and collectively), we have got to have a plan.

You may have heard Bro. Augustine Cruz use the saying "Proper planning prevents poor performance". There cannot be a truer statement. In Luke 14:28, Jesus gave us an example that infers the same thing. You cannot build a house without first, sitting down counting the cost and developing a plan. When building a house, the builder must have a floor plan. This floor plan tells you (in much detail) where everything needs to go. While developing that plan, you may realize you have to change or refine your idea or goal in order to come up with a more feasible plan. The same is true when it comes to the goals you have set for yourself for the year. You must sit down and ask the Lord to help you develop a plan for achieving your goals.

If you do not think that having a plan is important, look at the example God left for us in Joshua 6. God gave Joshua a very detailed plan for overtaking the city of Jericho. In order for them to overcome that fortified city, they had to stick to the plan. In that plan, God shows us that whenever we endeavor to do something, we must be organized. In his plan for victory over Jericho, God outlined who was to do what and when they were supposed to do it. As you develop your plan(s) for achieving your goal(s), you need to write out what you plan to do, how you will do it and by when you will have it done. As you move ahead, you will have something to look to as a guide and reference to see whether or not you are on track. So what is your plan for 2004?
