by: Anthony B. Campbell "...and they came and said unto him, Why do the disciples of John and the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?" Mark 2:18 Does a child of God have to fast? What is the purpose of fasting? Does it make me more spiritual if I fast? Have you ever asked these questions? Most Christians at some point and time ponder the subject of fasting. In many congregations, the topic is rarely discussed. As a result, some sincere Christians really do not understand the purpose and meaning of fasting. It can be a valuable tool in the life of a believer if it is done properly in accordance with the word of God. Let us look at some of these questions related to fasting and consider what the Bible says about this subject and see whether or not fasting is for you. Does a child of God have to fast? No, it is not a command that Christians fast. Although we find many examples where the people of God fasted, nowhere can we find where God commanded any of his children to fast as a part of their obedience to Him. It is an individual choice. It is a good thing to do but God does not demand that you do it. Fasting does not make you better or holier than someone who does not fast. There are many factors one must consider before deciding to fast including your own health and your motive. If God does not require that I fast then why should I? In essence, fasting is about self denial. In fasting, one denies him or herself physical nourishment for the purpose of focusing his/her mind on spiritual things or to be "in tune" with the Spirit of God. Fasting is a very beneficial tool available for a child of God to use. There are many reasons why a child of God can and should fast. Moses fasted while he was writing the ten commandments on the tables of stone (Exodus 34:28). Samuel asked the children of Israel to fast as part of their repentance (I Samuel 7:5,6). David fasted and prayed on behalf of his child (II Samuel 12:16, 17). The early Christians fasted and prayed before sending Paul and Barnabas to the Gentiles (Acts 13:2). These are just a few examples where God’s people chose to fast. As you can see, the reason for fasting varies from seeking God’s guidance in an important decision to intercession on behalf of others.
